I walk by River Lofts (Tower) on the West Side Highway all the time. It seems constantly under (re)construction. Any idea what’s going on? —S.
“Just some tuckpointing work that has now been successfully completed,” emailed a resident. “Scaffolding should be coming down from the Washington Street side in September. May be a bit longer on the West Side Highway side as some owners have elected to replace windows.” What’s tuckpointing, you say? “Tuckpointing is a way of using two contrasting colours of mortar in brickwork, one colour matching the bricks themselves, to give an artificial impression that very fine joints have been made,” sayeth Wikipedia. “In some parts of the United States and Canada, some confusion may result as the term is often used interchangeably with ‘pointing’ (to correct defects or finish off joints in newly laid masonry) and ‘repointing’ (to place wet mortar into cut or raked joints to repair weathered joints in old masonry).”
Now here’s my own Nosy Neighbor question about River Lofts: Is the retail space (on West) in play? When I went to take the above photo, I peeked in. I hadn’t done so in a while, so I don’t remember if it was different, but a light was one and I got that tingly feeling.

You are right about that “tingly feeling!” Part of the commercial space in the River Lofts building will be the new home of the newly expanded Live Well Company Gym…a boutique functional fitness personal training gym with a membership option…for those that crave an intimate, private, and comfortable gym experience. After 9 years of serving the Tribeca community we are super excited for this next step!
That last comment was not sponsored, although it gave you that really weird “tingly feeling” that it should have been sponsored.
@Jim: I thought this was legit news, and I’m pleased (if not tingly, which is probably good—too much of that and I’ll have to go to the doctor) that Anne Marie shared it here.
@Erik – then you’ll need to change the header from “COMMENTS” to “COMPANYMENTS”…..see what I did there?
@Jim: It was hard to miss. On one hand, it would be fantastic if companies advertised their news—don’t I know it!—and heaven knows I get annoyed when it’s a random shout-out. But this was in answer to a question I raised. I suppose she could have left it at the facts, but whatever. I just like knowing what’s coming.
@Erik – you’re such a softee. Which reminds me, if you’re in the mood for some great soft serve ice cream and smiley faces, come on down to Greenwich Street this weekend and take your pick from numerous ice cream food trucks, before it gets too cold. Please be advised that a stroller advisory has been issued for the surrounding areas thru the weekend. This comment was not sponsored.
