The New Kids of 2021

Back in February, I did a post on the people and places we had lost in 2020, including 72 storefronts that closed between the late fall of 2019 and January 2021.

Turns out from that date, there were more to come — 28 to be exact. So in an odd twist of addition, 100 stores closed here in the past two years. That list is below.

HOWEVER, scroll on if you want the good news! There are 31 new openings in the neighborhood proper, as well as a few notable ones from Fidi and the Seaport. Some were in motion before the pandemic, but still, they persevered and now the lights are on. Stay tuned for a list of what’s to come.

READE STREET PUB
The last call for Reade Street Pub — the Tribeca staple that has been an operating saloon at that location since the 1800s — drew a lively and misty-eyed crowd.

SERENATA
The restaurant opened on Duane Park during the pandemic in the former Max space but closed with no ceremony recently.

DELIMARIE
P. sent a note in March that Delimarie, the sweet little deli on Duane between Broadway and Church that sold beignets, had not reopened. All signs says it has closed permanently. Clearly they counted on a Civic Center crowd…

TRIBECA TAVERN
The bar — with its bodacious beer list and pool table — served locals and regulars and visitors for more than 25 years.

ETHAN ROSE SALON
Battery Park City resident Crystal Torres opened the salon in 2016 with hopes to expand.

87 ON WALKER
87 on Walker opened in August 2019, just six months before the city shut down entirely. It’s likely too tough to put it back together now.

LYONS DEN
Back when there was no word on when group classes can resume, the yoga studio that opened in 2013 gave up its space on Church and White.

PARM
All signs point to the conclusion that Parm, on Vesey but part of Brookfield, is closed. While it is not dismantled inside, it looks like most of the marketing is gone and our location is no longer listed on the Parm website. (And the email doesn’t work.)

PIZZA ON BROADWAY AND WHITE
I am pretty sure it’s the pizza joint on Broadway and White closed, since it was noted in comments a few weeks back. I know neighbors had a love/hate with this place, since the garbage on the sidewalk was an issue, but what’s NYC without cheap slices?

WOOPS!
The bakery at 93 Worth opened that location in 2015, and served pastries, cookies (with an emphasis on macarons) and sandwiched, all baked on the premises. There are still five locations in the city and you can order online.

ATTRAVERSA
Terra’s little sister opened across the street, at 225 West Broadway, in 2018. In fact the name means “cross over.” Happily Terra is looking great.

HUMBLE FISH
The poke restaurant was opened on Lispenard and Church by downtown resident Jonathan Chong in 2017 — the first of several poke establishments in the neighborhood — and was a favorite of neighbors.

STAPLES
The office supply store closed this location — at Vesey Street — on April 9.

MAVERICK HEALTH
The new 2021 retail: a pop-up covid testing site opened and quickly closed on Church and Duane. They probably should have stuck it out.

POKE GREEN
The fast casual local chain, which opened on Greenwich in 2017, still has it’s Financial District location operating. (The space is already a new toy store!)

ROLLER RABBIT
The clothing and accessories store at 176 Duane closed permanently, and its former neighbor — The Craft Studio –took its place.

POLARN O. PYRET
The Swedish children’s clothing store opened here in 2011, and will left a prominent store front empty — not to mention a reliable shop local option.

iGUARD HARDWARE
With the closing of this and Tribeca Hardware last August, the neighborhood is left with one hardware store — Tribeca Paint — and thank goodness for that.

THE WOOLY PUBLIC
The bar and restaurant on the south side of the Woolworth Building closed sometime during the past year.

Y7 STUDIO
The yoga studio was the fifth in the neighborhood to close since the pandemic, along with six other exercise studios.

CANAL STREET OYSTERS
The Martignetti brothers of Broome Street Hospitality resurrected that prominent corner at Canal and West Broadway in early fall of 2019, bringing some light and transparency back to the building after a series of nightclubs blacked out the windows.

BLISS BOWL
The to-go healthy Korean bowls, designed by a pharmacist and a chef, were a go-to for me and I would guess a lot of us in the southern part of the district. They opened in 2011 as Yorganic

HANK’S JUICY BEEF
A local fave among local residents and city workers, Henry “Hank” Tibensky opened his eponymous sandwich shop on Chambers in 2016

SWEET LILY
The nail salon on West Broadway opened 18 years ago and pioneered the use of natural products at a time when nail salons downtown were scarce. Owner Donna Perillo Karlin had a devoted following among neighbors and celebrities alike

TENOVERTEN
TenOverTen has closed its Tribeca studio, but still has salons in Fidi — at 121 Fulton between Nassau and William in pic above — and on the UES.

ARROYO STUDIO
The Arroyo Studio hair salon that was at 200 Hudson and Canal has closed our location but has a studio open by appointment just up the street at 180 Varick and another in Brooklyn. Find them here

ART IN GENERAL
Art in General, the non-profit gallery dedicated to providing artists with space, funding and other resources, will leave its Tribeca space at 79 Walker after 34 years.

NOT GONE YET, BUT SOON: A UNO TRIBECA
The women’s clothing store with a distinct downtown vibe will relocate to the Village by the end of the year after 20 years at Duane and West Broadway and a real dedication to the neighborhood. The reason: covid + untenable rents.

******************

I never expected this many New Kids would emerge in this year of covid. The list here shows 31 in total for Tribeca proper, plus a few from further downtown that are worth noting.

1 WHITE STREET
The heralded opening of a six-course fine dining experience on floors two and three and no reservations on the ground floor and curbside is the structure for a newcomer with a serious food & wine pedigree.

COCOON
Two local couples founded a members-only social club for kids and parents, filling the former Best Market space with very little to create just that: space.

BLUESTONE LANE
The Australian chain has made the enclosed sidewalk café and restaurant a bright and airy spot for breakfast all day and hearty lunches. They also opened one in Battery Park City in the former Pain Quotidien space a few months earlier.

DAILY GOODS
A Fidi resident opened the first in the local chain of to-go salads and smoothies in 2019; this is his fourth and he’s got three more in the pipeline.

FASHION SQUAD SCHOOL
Project Runway alum Layana Aguilar expanded her afterschool kids classes in a new space on Warren, and will add a retail store for her fashion line later this fall.

TAVERN ON READE
The owner of two West Village alehouses takes the lease at the former Maxwell’s, bringing a little life back to Reade Street.

BUDDHA-BAR
After five years of planning, the former Megu space on Thomas is once again a luxe, expansive restaurant, the 13th outpost of the Buddha-Bar global empire

PATISSERIE CHANSON BAKERY
The bakery side of Patisserie Chanson, the former Maison Kayser on the corner of Greenwich and Harrison, is open now 9 to 5 with coffee, pastry, a small selection of sandwiches and breads. The dining room should be open for dinner soon.

GLOSSLAB
Tribeca resident Rachel Glass opened the third location of the nail salon she founded in 2018 closer to home. Plus there are seven others in the pipeline.

TWIGGY TO GO
After weathering a fire, a pandemic and a flood (in that order), a former Gracie Mansion chef is cooking dinners to go in the former Baked space.

TRIBECA BARBER SPA
A young barber, trained in Montenegro, has taken over the former Myoptics space on Greenwich and Duane.

ONESEED
Out of necessity, a local resident discovered how to eat cleaner and healthier — and then figured out how to cook that way too.

INSOMNIA COOKIES
The national chain that opened its 50th store here in 2014 now has more than 100 locations around the country. The hook: they deliver till 12:30 a.m.

THE CRAFT STUDIO
The maker space for kids and adults closed during the pandemic but took a bigger space right next door.

LAMBERT & FILS
The Canadian lighting company, opened a showroom on Hudson and Duane.

NYLO
Two local residents — and local trainers — have opened a space to work with clients and to share with other independent trainers.

FARRA WINE BAR
Opened in March 2020, the 24-seat restaurant is the casual but equally inspired “next door” variation of its parent, Atera.

TRIBECA AESTHETICS
Battery Park City resident, CB1 member and plastic surgeon Jimmy Sung has moved his plastic surgery and skincare practice from Fidi to a storefront on Laight.

AZTECH MOUNTAIN
A new outerwear store has opened in the old Shoefly space on Duane Park. More on them soon when we have a chance to chat.

HEALTHYNEST
An online merchant that sells everything baby but plant-based products exclusively opened in the former wine store on Warren.

7-ELEVEN
The convenience store that used to be installed on Church and Warren reopened down the block at Park Place.

LUHRING AUGUSTINE
Adding to the burgeoning Tribeca Gallery District, the Chelsea (and Bushwick) stalwart now has an outpost here at 17 White.

GILDED RITUAL
The nail salon on Reade Street offers a 90-minute Russian service with private and semi-private rooms.

GERMAN SCHOOL MANHATTAN – PART II
German School Manhattan enrolled enough students to fill the former Park Preschool space on Warren, across the street from their primary location in the former Church Street School.

ST. TUESDAY
The Walker Hotel opened a subterranean cocktail bar that is accessed through the alley. More soon on my recent visit.

TWO KIDS AND A DOG
A new toy store in Dumbo opened another location here in the former Poke Green space across from Whole Foods. More TK.

ICCA
The Japanese omakase restaurant has been brewing for ages. More TK.

MATTRESS FIRM
The company has taken over the long-empty urgent care facility at 200 Chambers.

DAVID ZWIRNER GALLERY
This must be a happy announcement for a certain section of Walker Street, but also a pretty exciting moment for the Tribeca Gallery District. Longtime Chelsea gallerist took over the former nightclub space, M1-5.

GRIMM GALLERY
Another Chelsea gallery took over the 54 White Street space. More TK.

PPOW GALLERY
A heralded arrival planned before the pandemic and now installed at 392 Broadway and Walker. More TK.

PUPCULTURE
The Soho stalwart, which opened its second branch on Hudson four years, ago has taken over the Spot/AKC space on Murray.

OCULUS BEER GARDEN
The Oculus Beer Garden took over 5000 square feet at the 2 WTC plaza, at Church and Vesey. More TK.

LIVE AXE
A new venue combines food, drink and axe throwing — a surprisingly fun and complementary combination. And the first of its kind in Manhattan.

TORCH & CROWN BREWING COMPANY
With plans to open on March 9, 2020, the brewery — Manhattan’s first in nearly three decades — got crafty (get it?) with home delivery till the shop was ready.

MOMOFUKU SSAM BAR
I loved Bar Wayo, which closed last May, so was glad to see Momofuku made good use of this very pretty space at Pier 17. It closed its East Village Ssäm Bar and reopened here. More TK

MISTER DIPS & CARNE MARE
Andrew Carmellini has single-handedly enlivened this corner of the Seaport and Pier 17 with his version of Shake Shack and his upscale steakhouse and seafood combo: Carne Mare.

PEARL RIVER MART
Hardly a new kid, but I am counting it in the plus column since they were so rudely kicked out of the neighborhood: The 50-year-old Chinese emporium — a downtown institution — reopened in Soho after five years at Broadway and Walker.

ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE CINEMA
The new 14-plex at Fosun Plaza has reclining seats, table service during the show, a bar outside with 48 taps and oddly — a letterpress inking custom prints for events. Oh and no texting — or else.

ANASSA
A new Greek restaurant from the Harry’s folks opened in the North End Grill space. More soon.

TRIBECA’S KITCHEN
Andreas Kousoudakis Jr. has transformed Tribeca’s Kitchen into Marathi, a restaurant inspired by his summers on the beaches of Crete with homestyle Crete cooking.

HAZELTON BETTY FORD
The expanded location will offer outpatient treatment for addiction and mental health, family services and long-term support for addiction recovery. More TK.

DOMO SUSHI
Chef Billy Liu has opened Domo Sushi just north of Canal and is serving his old specialties plus an omakase menu at a three-seat bar.

SAGA
The Crown Shy team has taken four floors at the top of 70 Pine for a chef-driven fine dining restaurant, two floors of private dining, and a cocktail bar with a wraparound terrace.

THE BATTERY PLAYSCAPE
I have to end on what is great news for the smaller folks among us the new playground at The Battery. There’s a stage for puppet shows, a carpeted bowl for rolling and running, lots of ways to get up high, built-in houses for pretend play — and more.

  1. Great list!

There are some more galleries that can be added to the list as well, on Walker Street:

    – David Lewis Gallery
    – Chapter Gallery (60 Walker)
    – James Cohan – 2nd gallery opened on 2nd floor of 52 Walker (above Zwirner)
    – Bienvenu Steinberg gallery, 35 Walker Street
    – George Adams Gallery, 38 Walker Street

I believe all of these opened in 2021. I think there are others as well in Tribeca on other streets that newly opened in 2021

    • Thanks! I didn’t add Cohan’s second spot since it’s not a storefront, but I will add these to my to-do list. And there are more I have never caught up to from 2020: Chart, Andrew Kreps, Grimm…

      • Yes, we are very fortunate to have this proliferation of galleries taking these spaces in the neighborhood. Otherwise I fear we’d have a lot more empty storefronts, as regular retail is suffering or moving online…

  2. 2 businesses on the block of the Woolworth Building closed – Starbucks and Papyrus. Also, on Church Street, Schnippers closed. Yet, residential buildings go up like Legos. Same thing going on in Queens – no businesses, just more people.
