Nosy Neighbor: When Will the Buses on Warren Return to Chambers?

I was wondering if you know if the buses that have been “temporarily” re-routed from Chambers to Warren during the interminable reconstruction project are scheduled to return to their original main thoroughfare routes, now that the Chambers is open again. Or have they gotten so used to Warren that they will never go away? —J.

A spokesperson for the NYC Department of Transportation said that the rerouting of the buses to Chambers will require coordination with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the NYC Department of Design and Construction, and I should contact the DDC about a time frame.

A rep for the DDC said that the MTA has been notified that bus routes may resume on Chambers, but it’s the MTA’s decision as to when that will take place.

“There is work being done by a contractor in the middle of the street between Church and Broadway,” said the MTA rep, “and a VMB [variable message board] sign obstructing the intersection of Chambers and Church between Church and W. Broadway. That work needs to be completed and the DOT will need to restore bus stops for buses to return to their route.”

I asked if they knew how I might determine a time frame for the contractor’s work, but they said they wouldn’t know, since it’s not one of their contractors. They suggested I reach back out to the DDC. (If it sounds like I was frustrated with this, I actually wasn’t! Everyone was great about responding quickly and clearly.)

The DDC’s explanation is the closest we’re going to get to an answer right now: “Our field office spoke with the MTA and it seems the MTA is waiting for some of the punchlist work to be complete, which will likely be within a few weeks—however there have been some slight delays due to unforeseen conditions.”

  1. Thanks Erik! OK, so – fingers crossed, I guess.

  2. Sigh, I live on Chambers and thankfully high enough to not be bothered by the buses. Trust me Warren street. the buses where a walk in the park compared to the construction noise we endured!

  3. The bus stop signs are going up.
