Nosy Neighbor: Are These New Trees Dying?

West Street treesGreat to see a new “avenue of trees” planted outside BMCC on West Street, significantly improving the appearance of this stretch of sidewalk. After they were planted last week, however, it seems they are not being sufficiently watered and they appear to be dying already! Wondered if you had any contacts that you could get in touch with to let them know that these trees are thirsty! It would be a great shame if they did not flourish. —J.

From Barry Rosen, BMCC’s executive director of public affairs: “According to our Director of Buildings and Grounds, the trees are being watered on a constant basis. The reason that they may be looking a little wilted is because they are getting acclimated to the new conditions of West Street. They are called Golden Rain trees. We are taking the responsibility for watering the trees through a nursery we use and we have spent $16,000 on trees that are not our responsibility too.”

  1. someone feeling defensive? The trees do not look well.

    • It is normal for newly replanted trees to go through a period of distress / acclimation. Not saying that is what’s going on, but his explanation is plausible.
