Nosy Neighbor: What’s Getting Built on Top of 20 Warren?

20 Warren from streetI was wondering what the structure is that these construction men are building on top of the brown building? They’ve been working on it for the past couple of days. —G.

A permit in the Department of Buildings online database says it’s a gallows. Kidding!

It says this: “NEW ELEVATOR IN EXISTING SHAFT, NEW PIT ELEVATOR AND NEW ELEVATOR BULKHEAD.” So that’d be the bulkhead. As you can see from the picture at right, it’s set far enough toward the front of the building that it’ll be quite visible to anyone walking on Warren. One more compelling argument for expanding Tribeca’s historic districts….

UPDATE: A concerned reader emailed about the work: “There are no nets to protect the street, wood is not secured and strewn on the roof (high wind season is on our heels), the workers wear hard hats but never wear harnesses when up on the highest segment or on ladders and they are only feet from the edge of the parapet. Advice: Don’t walk on that sidewalk once we get the fall winds!”

  1. You can call 311 to find out how to report unsafe conditions at a construction site. Normally there’s a number posted at a site, but since this has no safety precautions…
