Nosy Neighbor: Why Do Brookfield Place’s Escalators Run That Way?

I have a question about the escalators that run between Brookfield Place and the PATH station corridor. Why are the directions are different from what you might expect? As you approach from the lower level, shouldn’t the up escalators be on the right? —A.

Brookfield’s Melissa Coley explains: “Those escalators have been ‘cycled’ so that each of the six escalators run the same amount of time in both directions. There are no fixed up or down escalators; the direction for each escalator is changed according to a schedule. For example, the schedule has the three north side units (right side from bottom looking up) running in the up position during the morning rush (6 a.m.-10 a.m.). If someone experienced something different during the morning rush of a business day then it may have something to do with units being out of service for repairs.” As you might suspect, the escalators are cycled thus so they wear uniformly. “If they are not cycled then reversing them becomes nearly impossible,” says Coley.
