Nosy Neighbor: What’s That New Building Next to 30 Park Place?

To the east of 30 Park Place is what will be the new plaza, and to the east of the plaza is a narrow building under construction. Is it part of 30 Park Place? What’s it for? —M.

Good question! I’ve walked by a million times but I’m always so busy staring up at 30 Park Place that I had never noticed it. (Pictured at top: the structure as seen from Barclay; at right, as seen from Park Place.) My first thought was that it’s buttressing the building next to it, but the structure is too substantial for that.

A diagram that used to be on the Silverstein website, meanwhile, makes it look somewhat parking-garage-y (with a water feature in the middle…? For the Four Seasons mermaids?). Text continued below.

Four Season Hotel and Private Residences New York Downtown lobby planSo I got in touch with the sales office, which forwarded me to the PR team. “It’s an annex building,” was the response. “It will house mechanical, loading dock and the underground garage entrance. Please let me know if you have any additional questions.” You know I do: Does a rendering showing what it will look like exist? For public consumption? Or even for the plaza? I doubt it, but one does have to ask.
