Nosy Neighbor: Which Restaurant Is Opening at 9 Maiden Lane?

The Malt House at 9 Maiden LaneDo have any idea what’s going into 9 Maiden Lane? It used to be a deli (Maiden Heaven) and rumor (and permits) say it’ll be an eating establishment, but I was curious as to what kind. I live nearby and I’m hoping I’ll finally get my long-awaited and elusive “local” place to hang out. —D.

I asked Luis Vazquez-Willhelm of the FiDi Fan Page, and he said he couldn’t remember the details other than craft beer played an important role. So I wandered down to Maiden Lane, where I chatted up a nearby business owner, who said it was going to be an Irish gastropub, and that the proprietors have another one in the Village. By the time I got home, Luis pointed out that I could try checking with Community Board 1. Sure enough, the agenda from December 2013 listed MaidenEire LLC d/b/a Malt House.

The original Malt House at 206 Thompson is “an American Tavern,” according to its website, and then there’s this, from Facebook: “With an extensive list of All American Micro Brews on tap, as well as countless more beers by the bottle, the craft beer seeker will always feel right at home at The Malt House. Our New York City Gastropub menu features dishes that are each deliciously paired with one of our craft beers, and our commitment to sourcing our food locally guarantees of customers the freshest sustainable foods.” No farms or other purveyors are mentioned, so you may have to take their word for it. (Pictured below: The fried chicken waffle club.)

The nice gent who answered the phone when I called explained that the new Malt House will have a similar vibe and menu to the one in the Village, but it’ll be much bigger—nearly 7,000 square feet, vs. 1,000 square feet on Thompson, with 20-foot ceilings on the ground floor. Their goal is to get the ground floor and (new) mezzanine ready to open by mid-November, with the cellar level to follow, hopefully before the New Year.
