Nosy Neighbor: What’s Happening on Pier 26?

Pier 26 by S“Just wondering if you have any idea what the set-up on Pier 26 is for? It’s the most enormous one I’ve seen there—must be some corporate event but I can’t find any information about it.”—E.

Ricardo Tisci courtesy GivenchyAh, that must be the Givenchy fashion show on Sept. 11. We actually learned about it back in May, and I guess I didn’t realize it was a big deal—or a surprise—so I never mentioned it again. Here’s Racked’s explainer:

The ticket giveaway is a little bit different than expected: Rather than 820 public tickets (since 280 were set aside for fashion schools), the number of people receiving invitations will be cut in half so that each recipient can bring a friend. Plus, the entry form required an address so that an additional 100 tickets can be distributed to those who live near the show’s still-unannounced venue. [Boldface mine for obvious reasons; enter here.]

So with that in mind—and to distract ourselves from constantly refreshing our inbox—let’s theorize where this mystery location might be. Creative director Riccardo Tisci [pictured above] dropped a couple of hints while speaking to WWD recently, like that the show will take place on the street. He’s also previously mentioned that, with help from artist Marina Abramovic, the presentation will take its date (September 11th) into consideration as well. With a sunset start time in mind, we’re guessing that a stunning view of One World Trade Center in twilight is in order.

P.S. Thanks to S. and B., respectively, for the photos of Pier 26!

  1. A fashion show on 9/11 a stone’s throw from the site?

  2. Even though the event planner negotiated with us to issue the public tickets at LILAC and offered us two VIP tickets as a bonus, they never let on what it was, which made it all pretty weird. They found another place in the end but stuck to the ticket offer. Did we want tickets to an unknown event, on 9/11? Not really. We managed to gather that it was a Fashion Week event. None of us wanted to spend that day that way.

  3. I am beginning to see why the HRP does not let the downtown community use its own pier- too much money to be made renting it out as a venue to outside organizations and events.

    • exactly. hrp has become a giant greedy octopus with it’s tentacles up and down the hudson. they keep building these extravagant projects that nobody requested and then bend or break the rules to raise the money to pay for it.

the killer with pier 26 is that it was built after sandy and they built it to the same height as pier 25. it will not survive the next super storm without extensive damage.
